For the Battle is the Lord’s

1 Samuel 17:47 King James Version

“And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.”

For every battle, for every problem and issues that we are confronted with, know that we cannot claim victory over it without GOD.

In this passage, this tells the story of David versus Goliath. Even though it looks like the odds are against David and the Israelites, as David is but a simple and humble sheep herder with a slingshot while Goliath is a giant wielding the finest Philistine shield, spear and sword, David was still able to kill Goliath when he slang the stone at Goliath’s forehead in 1 Samuel 17:49 and claim victory over the Philistine army in the succeeding verses.

1 Samuel 17:49-51 King James Version

49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

How was David able to do such mighty feat? It is because he calls on the name of the LORD in 1 Samuel 17:45

1 Samuel 17:45 King James Version

“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.”

Also David draws on God’s promise to deliver their enemies at their feet in Deuteronomy 20:1

Deuteronomy 20:1 King James Version

“When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.”

David upon becoming King have made Psalm 124, blessing and calling on the name of the LORD

Psalm 124:1-8 King James Version

1 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;

2 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

There is no greater help that we can call upon but the Lord who made the heaven and the earth.

We see this as a recurring theme whenever the Israelites call upon the name of the Lord, that they were able to be delivered out of the hands of their adversaries and claim victory over them. Such as the story of Moses crossing the Red Sea where the Egyptians were unable to pursue because of the Pillar of Fire in Exodus 14:24 and eventually drowned when the Red Sea returned after being divided in Exodus 14:28. Also the story of the Fall of Jericho in Joshua 6 when they obeyed the LORD’s instruction to compass the city seven times blowing their seven trumpets made of ram's horns and the city was delivered to them at the seventh day after they shouted for the LORD.

These promises of victory however are for the children of Israelites because they have physical covenant with GOD, but us Saved Christians do we have similar promises from the LORD when we call on His Name? Yes! Through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

1 John 5:1-5, 14-15 King James Version

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

And how can we be sure that Jesus Christ will grant us victory over our battles, our problems and issues in life? In Hebrews we read…

Hebrews 11:6 King James Version

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

When we turn our Faith on Jesus Christ we have already claimed victory from this world as we are granted eternal life and eternal security in Heaven and that is His promise and it cannot be broken.

John 3:16 King James Version

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
