Pray for your Enemies

Matthew 5:44-45 King James Version

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

We must remember as a Christian we ought to do what Jesus Christ did and preach. This passage is one that Jesus preached in the Sermon of the Mount, and it’s about praying and doing good for our enemies.

We know that we are still in this flesh and the first reaction when someone wronged us is to find ways reciprocate it back to them or harbour resentments towards that person, and in regards to praying there is a great temptation to pray in the flesh and ask God for the wrong things which may lead us either to sin or fall out of God’s favor.

Jesus Christ told us to love our enemies, bless them, do good to them and pray for them, because Jesus wants to call us into a higher standard and be set apart with the rest of the world if we are to follow Him.

We see this again being preached by Apostle Paul to the Romans.

Romans 12:14,17-21 King James Version

14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

God provides a solution to deal with our enemies which is not to recompense evil for evil nor give place unto wrath, but overcome evil with good. Yes, this is a hard thing for us to do specially when we’re still in our flesh, but compare that to what Jesus did, He prayed to God to forgive those who crucified, and mocked Him at the cross

Luke 23:33-34 King James Version

33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Jesus Christ did not just suffered and died for you and me, He suffered and died for all of us, even to the worst of us. Dying not just for those who loved Him but also those who hated Him, for us to be given the perfect atonement for our sins and the gift of Salvation. If Jesus Christ did that for us then praying for our enemies and doing good to them is the least we could do.

And know that before you and I were saved, we were enemies of God because of our sins

Colossians 1:21-22 King James Version

21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

And yet He still died for you and me so we would not be appointed to wrath and be found sinless and blameless in His sight.

Romans 5:8 King James Version

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

We should pray for our enemies, bless them and if they stumble and fall along the way we should not rejoice on their misfortune

Proverbs 22:17-18 King James Version

17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

An example of this is the prophet Jonah who refused to follow God’s command to preach in Ninevah for their wickedness had reached God, but Jonah wanted that city’s destruction so he fled to Tarshish instead. God dealt with Jonah by letting him be swallowed by a great fish and spent three days into the belly of hell until Jonah cried unto the Lord and agreed to preach in Ninevah.

If you bless your enemies, know that God will bless you as well.

1 Peter 3:9 King James Version

“Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.”

And if you forgive your enemies’ trespasses, God will also forgive your trespasses

Matthew 6:14-15 King James Version

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

So pray for your enemies just as Jesus did.

John 13:15 King James Version

“For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”
