Put the Good Fear In and the Bad Fear Out

Matthew 10:28 King James Version

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

In life, everyone has experienced fear, fear of falling, fear of losing, fear of heights, some may have stage frights or scared of horror movies, others have certain phobias. Fear is an emotional response to perceive threats, but didn’t you know that there is such a thing as Good Fear and Bad Fear according to the Bible?

The Good Fear – Fearing the LORD

Psalm 128:1-4 King James Version

1 (A Song of degrees.) Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.

2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

This type of Fear is more of a “Reverence” and profound respect of God’s Authority, Power and Glory, the benefit of this is that you’ll be bless for fearing the LORD because you walk in his ways: keeping His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight (1 John 3:22). The next benefits in fearing the LORD are gaining of wisdom and knowledge.

Psalms 111:10 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

You want to know why this world is sinful and wicked? It is because they don’t fear God, they don’t follow His commandments, some don’t even believe that there is a God, they don’t fear the consequences of their sins, that’s why God calls them fools, and God has the power to cast them to Hell when they die in their sins (Matthew 10:28).

Psalm 14:1 King James Version

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”

Romans 3:16-18 King James Version

16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:

17 And the way of peace have they not known:

18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

If you want to decrease the crime rate and all the woes in this world then the solution is for everyone to start fearing the LORD! God can be merciful and gracious but there is a limit to how much mercy and grace He will give, before He starts pouring His wrath and judgement to people.

Fear of the LORD leads to life, and safety

Proverbs 14:26-27 – 26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Proverbs 19:23 – “The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.”

The Bad Fear – being overcome by the spirit of fear

2 Timothy 1:7 King James Version

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

The second type of fear pertains to fear that are not from God and it’s the opposite of the attributes stated in the verse: power (antonym: weak / helplessness), love (antonym: hate), sound mind (antonym: doubt / confusion). This type of fear unlike the first one, does not provide any benefits and this should be turned away, because it is a sin to be fearful.

Revelation 21:8 King James Version

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

How to overcome the spirit of fear?

1) Receive the free gift of Salvation (Eph. 2:8-9, Rom. 10:9-10)

Isaiah 43:1-3 King James Version

1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Romans 8:15 King James Version

“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

When we receive Salvation we are eternally secured in Heaven and trust God that He can grant our requests according to His Will.

2) Dwell in Love (Mark 12:30-31, John 14:15, John 15:10)

1 John 4:16-18 King James Version

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

3) Praying Always

Ephesians 6:18 King James Version

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

Philippians 4:6 King James Version

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Proverbs 3:5-7 King James Version

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
