Respecting God's Ordained Authority

Romans 13:1 King James Version

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."

The Bible says that we should submit and respect authority. As the verse continues.

Romans 13:2-5 King James Version

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

This means that rebelling against authority is like rebelling against God

Jesus Christ also respected authority during His time, as we read in Matthew

Matthew 22:17-22 King James Version

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

This is the same reason why we pay taxes today, we are rendering what is for the authority.

Respecting authority is not only meant respecting and obeying our leaders but also respecting and obeying our parents as we read in Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:1-7 King James Version

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

For there is reward to those who respect and obey them in verse 8

Ephesians 6:8 King James Version

"Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free."

But what about when the authority goes rogue and become corrupt and unjust?

Our final authority will always be the Word of God.

Acts 5:29 King James Version

"Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men."

Isaiah 33:22 King James Version

"For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us."

We should trust in the Lord to deal with them as God has the power to put them into their position of authority and has the power to get them out.

Daniel 2:21 King James Version

“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”

As the authority on this world will also be judged by God and reward them according to their deeds

Ephesians 6:9 King James Version

“And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.”

While us Saved Believers in Christ we should set a good example

Matthew 10:16 King James Version

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

Which is similar to what Paul did in Acts 22:24-29 where he outsmarted the centurion and its chief captain.

Romans 12:20 King James Version

"Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head."

Because the fruit of the spirit is...

Galatians 5:22-23 King James Version

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
