Sin and the Results of the Fall

We are now studying Hamartiology, the doctrine of Sin. This comes logically from the study of Anthropology, the Origin of Man, and the doctrines that deal with the Trinity. This lesson will deal with the matter of Sin as it is related to God and to man as a tripartite being. God is a Trinity, and we studied this very thoroughly in our lessons on the Godhead. We learned that man was made in the image of God (a trinity), and we must deal with this when discussing this matter of Sin.

After the fall, the body became a slowly dying, death-doomed body because the spirit in it had already died. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Ever since the fall of man, man is born with an appointment with death, and as one of the ancient philosophers said, “Until you are ready to die, you are not ready to live.” Death is the big appointment that you must face. It is the one you must be prepared for. If you are not prepared for meeting death, then you are in trouble because you have an appointment with him.

The dictionary calls sin a “transgression”—evil, a violation of the accepted moral, religious, or social code. Sin is a lack of conformity to the character of God, whether an act or a state. That is why an atheist can do nothing but live in sin all his life. That is why they are all “do-gooders.” Have you noticed how Atheists are all humanitarian benefactors? They are all trying to atone for their sins.

Sin is a hopelessly incurable disease of the soul, characteristic of the old nature. “Sin is the transgression of the law,” 1 John 3:4. Sin can be an act, like sins. The breaking of the law or a commandment is a sin, and “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures,” (l Cor. 15:3). Sin can be a state: the fallen state of man without righteousness, the natural condition of every man. Sin is a nature.

Man is born “dead in trespasses and sins.” According to the New Testament, men are “by nature the children of wrath,” and they are “the children of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2–3). That is, the Bible picture of man is contrary to the picture given by every major religious leader and political leader in the world. The Bible picture of man is totally negative. The world system, trying to live and die without Christ and get along without Christ, must maintain a peak mountain top of morale, built on convincing itself it is all right when it is not.

A “transgression” is the overstepping of the law. An INIQUITY is an act inherently wrong or forbidden. ERROR is the departure from the right, missing the mark, the failure to meet the divine standards. TRESPASSING is the intrusion of the self-will in the sphere of God’s authority. LAWLESSNESS is spiritual anarchy. The sin of omission, UNBELIEF, an insult to the divine veracity of God: “An evil heart of unbelief.”

The lists of sins found in Exodus and 1 Corinthians include idolatry, cursing, sabbath breaking, homosexuality, disrespect of parents, murder, adultery, stealing, lying, covetousness, effeminacy, masturbation, drunkenness, reviling, extortion, unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, maliciousness, envy, debate, deceit, malignity, whispering, backbiting, hating God, despitefulness, pride, boasting, invention of evil things, covenant breaking, being without natural affection, implacability, unmercifulness, lawlessness, disobedience, unholiness, whoremongering, kidnapping, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication, lasciviousness, witchcraft, hatred, variance, indolence, strife, sedition, heresies, revelling, evil thoughts, an evil eye, and foolishness.

There are over fifty different sins mentioned in the word of God in Romans chapter 1; 1; Timothy chapter 1; Colossians chapter 3; Galatians chapter 5; and Mark chapter 7.

Sin cannot be hidden: “be sure your sin will find you out,” Numbers 32:23. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy,” Proverbs 28:13. The results of sin are death, the losing of the soul, condemnation, guilt, perdition, shame, remorse, punishment, suicide, eternal fire, Hell, and the Lake of Fire. The only remedy for sin is the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God (bless God) that “taketh away the sin of the world.” You can call sin “privation, error, mistake, lack of adjustment,” or “lack of appreciation of value, or concept of reality,” or any of the God-forsaken lies drummed up by psychologists from the depraved work of the degenerate Sigmund Freud, but sin is still sin. “The wages of sin” is still death, and inflation has not changed them one bit. “Be sure your sin will find you out.”

If you are on your road to Hell, don’t forget that Christ died—the Just for the unjust—and bore your sins in His own body on the cross that you, being dead to sin, might live unto righteousness. For in Him there is no sin; He did no sin.

The Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20). In the Bible the word is “sin.” It is not called “error,” “default,” a “lack of God consciousness,” a “failure to adjust,” to “re evaluate the principles,” or to “integrate the ethnic community.” It is called “sin.” That is the last word that Pontius Pilate ever heard from the lips of the Son of God (John 19:11). The Bible defines it: “All unrighteousness is sin,” (1 John 5: 17). If it is not right, it is SIN. Do you want it any clearer? “Be sure your sin will find you out.” There has not lived a man upon this earth that hasn’t gone through that peculiar cycle of thinking where he imagines he is an exception to the rule.

Now, SIN began by doubting what God said, Genesis chapter 3, taking from the word of God, adding to the word of God, and then disobeying the words of God. Sin is defined in Psalm 51:1 as a transgression, in Psalm 51:9 as an iniquity, in 1 John 5:17 as coming short of the mark. In 1 Timothy 1:9 it is lawlessness. In Hebrews 3:12 it is unbelief. The list of sins will be found in Exodus chapter 20; 1 Corinthians chapter 6; Romans chapter 1; 1 Timothy chapter 1; Colossians chapter 3; Galatians chapter 5; and Mark chapter 7. The result of sin is death, physical and spiritual. The man is lost to God. He is lost from Heaven. Guilt comes in, but the “guilt complex” is a very healthy and very necessary thing.

When the modern psychiatrists got rid of the guilt complex they destroyed their patients. Do you know why they couldn’t give them the right kind of complex when they got rid of the guilt complex? Because they had no cure. The psychiatrist’s couch and the psychiatrist’s office became the pulpit where the “congregation” had to spend thirty-five to seventy-five dollars an hour to get a temporary cure that did not solve the problem. That is, the psychiatrist stole the preacher’s income when they did not know the cure. Now, I’ll grant you some of the preachers didn’t know it either. But the Bible says, “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John l:7). That will take care of the trouble in your childhood, won’t it, brother? And the blood of Jesus Christ will “purge your conscience from dead works.”

Now, what is the remedy for sin? The one remedy given for sin, according to the word of God, is not a penitentiary or correctional facility. The remedy for sin in the Bible has nothing to do with seances or prajna or obtaining enlightenment or nirvana or samadhi, or getting rid of your karma. The remedy for sin in the word of God is never connected with anything recommended by any major religious, scholastic, social, economic, intellectual, or philosophical leader anywhere in America or Europe today. Let’s get that clear.

The remedy for sin in the word of God, is the atoning death of the Lord Jesus Christ. In John 1:29 John the Baptist said, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” In I John 3:5, “And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.” No man can cleanse himself from sin. Job said in Job 9:30–31, “If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.” God said to the Israelites in Jeremiah 2:22, “For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God.”

What is the remedy for sin? The born-again, Bible-believing Christian has the only remedy that will meet the requirements of the problem “The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin...In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Eph. 1:7; 1 John 1:7). No man is without sin. Therefore, every man needs a Saviour, a PERSON. Why do you need a person? Because you are a PERSON. Why do you need shed blood? Because you have blood in you. You are a bloody person. The Scripture has concluded that all have sinned. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he [God] hath made him [that’s Jesus Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Now, isn’t that something? If you are not saved, you need a Saviour from sin. You need to be saved. The Saviour is the Lord Jesus Christ. When we put those signs on our car saying “Jesus Saves,” we are not talking about a goalie saving pucks from going into the net. When we say “Jesus Saves,” we don’t mean that he picks up a drunkard out of the gutter and gets him a job at the First National Bank. When we say “Jesus Saves,” we mean you doctors, lawyers, bankers, college professors, mayors, governors, commissioners, highway patrolmen, policemen, deacons, elders, bishops, archbishops, cardinals, priests, preachers, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, congressmen, senators, bricklayers, plumbers, and electricians cannot face God at death in your own righteousness. YOU HAVE GOT TO HAVE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF JESUS CHRIST.

We should note this thing about sin. Sin is still sin. The wages of sin is still death. Inflation has not changed those wages one bit. “Be sure your sin will find you out.” If it doesn’t find you out in your home or family, it will find you out in your character. If it doesn’t find you out there, it will find you out in your mind, and it will find you out at the Judgment, and eventually it will find you out in Hell. “Be sure your sin will find you out.” Don’t kid yourself into thinking you will get away with it. No man ever did get away with it. You won’t get away with it. The wisest man that ever lived said, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

God sees and uncovers hidden sins, like the sin of Adam, the sin of Cain, and the sins of Achan (Joshua 7:20), Ananias, and Sapphira (Act 5:3). They were all uncovered and brought to light. Not only will the sin be uncovered, but the sinner will be revealed too. There is only one hiding place, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.
